Indian fans Jailed for Partying Pakistan’s victory

Like millions of persons watching the T20 world cup, Indian fans were also involved but unlike the majority of the Indians, the Muslim people of India were supporting Pakistan and they celebrated Pakistan’s remarkable conquest.

But the Indian Police arrested those fans who were supporting Pakistan. One of those fans was a school teacher from the Northern Indian city of Udaipur named Nafeesa Attari. Her crime was that she celebrated Pakistan’s win over India in the opening match of the T20 WC on her WhatsApp status.

She is among numerous other Muslims of India who has been arrested for backup Pakistan. It is shocking to know that the World’s largest democratic state doesn’t allow freedom of thought and speech for its minorities.

Sadly, Ms. Nafeesa was fired from her job of teaching and was charged with “assertions prejudicial to national integration”. She even apologized on a local TV channel in an interview for causing offense. But, on the flip side, she is released on bail and is back home with her family. The charges remain on her though.

There were many other arrests in the state including three students who also celebrated Pakistan's triumph. All three of them are still in jail struggling to get a lawyer and are suspended from their college.

There were countless hate speeches and comments by the citizens of India as well as senior members of political organizations saying that this is anti-national and terroristic behavior from those people who are living in India and its soil and are supporting a bitter rival.

According to the police and the Indian cricket team supporters, this is a violation of national honesty and treason shown by the minorities of their country and they should be punished strictly for doing so.

When it comes to cricket, there is no lack of passion between Pakistan and India. But these latest arrests in India have raised questions on the democratic laws and preservation of the rights of minorities as well as the freedom of speech and expression.
